Hammond B3's and Leslie Tone Cabinets
There are not many things in this world that we can consider constant, certainly in
the world of musical instruments. That being said, there is one that has survived the
hands of time, made it through the many genres and without question,
had numerous love affairs with all sorts of keyboardist across
this planet. Affectionately known as The Hammond B3 console organ.
Since I was a very young guitarist, I had quite the awe for this lady.
There was nothing that looked and sounded like her. She was often
imitated and I'm sure because of her 400 plus girth, many players
accepted the "pretty close" sound of her synth impersonators. I think
the true affectionato has the need for the smell of wood and oil, and
of course the use of four very strong men. This baby in conjunction
with the Leslie Tone Cabinet,
have left their mark in Jazz, Blues and without question the ever
growing world of Rock and Roll. In my opinion, the two musicians
responsible for her popularity were, Mark Stein of The Vanilla Fudge and Felix Cavaleri of the Young Rascals. From that point on, every Rocker had to have a B3, nothing sounded like it!
I know some of you may think it's not worth the trouble, too heavy,
many moving parts to fix and not very much room on stage. But when you
lean on a screaming B3 with Leslie swirling, it's enough to make you
wet your pants!
I started my love affair with Hammonds several years ago by learning
what makes them tick and finding a few tricks along the way to keep
them running and sounding great. If indeed you are the proud owner of
any of the tone wheel Hammonds and Leslie Tone Cabinets and need repair assistance, I can probably help you for a nominal fee. Email me or call Highpoint Studio.
In closing, the worst thing you can do to your Hammond or Leslie, is to let them sit unused and not working. Don't do it, give them to ME!
